I spent about six hours on this putting together answers to the most common questions I'm asked by beginners on Photoshop. I'd love to see your progress if you found this useful. I hope this helps!
If you are unfamiliar with layer masks, you will need to review my brief overview on layers masks first.

My #1 Tip for Beginners: Don't look for tutorials on your craft (sigs, photo manipulation, sketching, etc.) Half the time, even if you follow along, you won't understand the WHY behind the techniques used, and thus it becomes difficult to apply it in your future works. Study basic design concepts first (depth, lighting, flow, rule of odds, rule of thirds, the Gestalt principles, etc). Once you get a good grasp on the basics, then venture out into tutorials specific to your craft. It will make a lot more sense then! The concepts taught in this tutorial can be applied to multiple genres. Experiment, and try them out on your other projects, too.
